PESHAWAR: Lawyer movement’s frontline leader and a candidate for Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Ali Ahmed Kurd said on Tuesday that lawyers have become the biggest ‘pressure group’ in the country which compelled the former unconstitutional president to quit.

He said the democratic government would also face this pressure group if it did not honour the Murree Declaration and other agreements regarding restoration of pre-November 03, 2007 judiciary.

Kurd who was in Peshawar as a part of his SCBA election (scheduled for October 28) campaign, said this at a press briefing at Peshawar High Court. The lawyer leader alleged that few opportunists in the Pakistan Bar Council and Pakistan People’s Party lawyer leaders were trying to wind up the lawyers’ 18-month-long movement, which is within an inch of its victory.

He, however, warned the government that lawyers were united from Khyber to Karachi and would strengthen the movement to restore judiciary to its November 2, 2007 position. He said the deposed judges’ fresh oaths cannot weaken the lawyers’ movement and the government will witness lawyers’ strength in Islamabad on the black day (November 3).
